Visible veins in your hands are very common and usually completely normal. On their own, they don’t mean anything is wrong with your health.

Here’s what typically causes them:

Why your hand veins might be visible

1. Low body fat

If you have less fat under your skin, veins sit closer to the surface—so they show more clearly.

2. Age

As you get older, skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity, making veins more noticeable.

3. Heat or exercise

When you’re warm or physically active, veins expand (this is called Vasodilation), so they stand out more.

4. Genetics

Some people naturally have more prominent veins—it’s just how their body is built.

5. Physical fitness

People who are active or muscular often have more visible veins due to better circulation and lower fat levels.

When it might need attention

Visible veins alone are not a problem—but check for other symptoms like:

  • Pain or tenderness
  • Swelling in the hands or arms
  • Sudden changes in appearance
  • Bulging, twisted veins (could relate to Varicose veins, though rare in hands)

Bottom line

Seeing veins in your hands usually means normal circulation, body composition, or temperature changes—not poor hygiene or a health issue.

If you’re noticing something unusual along with it, feel free to describe it and I can help you figure out whether it’s worth checking.
