Bought a weird ceramic jar at a spring estate sale

Posted on April 14, 2026 by Admin

That sounds like a fun find—estate sales are full of surprises. A “weird ceramic jar” could be anything from decorative pottery to something quite specific or valuable.

A few things that can help figure it out:

  • Shape & size – Is it tall, squat, wide-mouthed, narrow-necked?
  • Lid or no lid – Does it seal tightly or just sit on top?
  • Markings – Any stamp, signature, or numbers on the bottom?
  • Design – Plain, painted, glazed, patterned, or textured?
  • Openings – Just one opening, or multiple holes (like a shaker or fermenting jar)?
  • Weight & feel – Thick and heavy (stoneware?) or lighter (earthenware/porcelain)?

Common possibilities:

  • A cookie jar or kitchen storage jar
  • A fermentation crock (used for pickles, kimchi, etc.)
  • A urn or decorative vase
  • A ginger jar (often decorative, sometimes collectible)
  • A humidifier jar (older pieces sat on radiators)

If you can, upload a photo—that’s the fastest way to identify it. Even a quick snapshot of the whole jar and the bottom mark can reveal a lot.
