Scratches on glasses: don’t waste money: apply a little and they’ll disappear instantly.

Posted on April 26, 2026 by Admin

That claim is misleading. Scratches on eyeglasses cannot be made to “disappear instantly” with a simple home trick.

Once a lens is scratched, the damage is usually physical removal of the coating or lens surface, and that cannot be truly reversed at home.

👓 Why “scratch removal hacks” don’t really work

Most viral tips suggest things like:

  • toothpaste
  • baking soda
  • car polish
  • petroleum jelly

What actually happens:

  • They may temporarily fill tiny scratches, making them less visible
  • But they do NOT repair the lens
  • They can damage anti-reflective or UV coatings

⚠️ What you should avoid

  • ❌ Toothpaste (abrasive → worsens coatings)
  • ❌ Baking soda (too harsh for lenses)
  • ❌ Glass polish or random chemicals (can strip coatings)

🧼 What actually helps

✔️ For minor smudges (not scratches)

  • Microfiber cloth
  • Lens-safe cleaning spray

✔️ For scratched lenses

  • Replace lenses (most effective solution)
  • Ask optician about:
    • scratch-resistant coatings
    • polycarbonate lenses (more durable)

✔️ Temporary “improvement” only

  • Very light scratches may look less visible after cleaning
👉 but this is cosmetic only, not repair

🧠 Bottom line

There is no instant home remedy that removes scratches from glasses permanently. Most DIY tricks only mask or risk damaging the lenses further.

If you want, I can suggest how to prevent scratches in the future and make glasses last much longer.
