No need to scrub, just put the oven rack in a bag and it will be as good as new.

Ah, that’s a clever oven-rack cleaning hack! The idea is to use a bag (usually a large garbage or resealable oven bag) with a cleaning solution so the grime practically dissolves itself—no scrubbing required. Here’s how it works safely:

Materials

  • Large oven-safe bag (oven roasting bag works best)
  • Baking soda or dish soap (or a mix)
  • Hot water
  • Optional: vinegar for extra degreasing

Steps

  1. Remove the oven racks and place them inside the bag.
  2. Add cleaning agent: Sprinkle baking soda over the racks or add a few squirts of dish soap.
  3. Add hot water: Pour enough to cover the racks partially. If using vinegar, pour a small amount over baking soda—it will fizz and help loosen grime.
  4. Seal the bag: Close tightly and shake gently to coat the racks.
  5. Let it sit: Leave the bag for several hours or overnight. The solution softens baked-on grease and food residue.
  6. Rinse & dry: Remove the racks, rinse under warm water, and wipe dry. They should look almost brand-new!

It’s a great hack because it avoids harsh scrubbing or chemicals, especially if your oven racks are delicate or non-stick.

If you want, I can share a shortcut that works in just 30 minutes with no soaking—it’s a bit of a magic trick for lazy cleaning. Want me to?
