Grandma’s Vanilla Flan

Here’s a simple, traditional-style Grandma’s Vanilla Flan recipe—smooth, creamy, and with that classic caramel top.


🍮 Grandma’s Vanilla Flan

🍯 Ingredients

For the caramel:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp water (optional, helps melting evenly)

For the flan:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 can (400 g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (370 ml) evaporated milk
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the caramel

  • Add sugar to a pan over medium heat (add water if using).
  • Let it melt slowly until it turns a golden amber color.
  • Quickly pour into a flan mold or baking dish and swirl to coat the bottom.
  • Set aside to harden.

2. Prepare the custard

  • In a bowl, whisk eggs gently (don’t overbeat).
  • Add condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla, and salt.
  • Mix until smooth.

3. Strain (important!)

  • Strain the mixture through a sieve to make it extra silky.

4. Bake

  • Pour mixture over the caramel.
  • Place the mold in a larger baking tray with hot water (water bath).
  • Bake at 160°C (320°F) for about 45–60 minutes.

5. Cool & serve

  • Let it cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours (overnight is best).
  • To serve, run a knife around the edges and flip onto a plate.

You get a soft, silky custard topped with rich caramel sauce—this is the classic style of Flan found in many family kitchens around the world.
