What should your blood pressure be after age 60? What you should know

Posted on April 12, 2026 by Admin

That’s a great question—and the answer is often misunderstood.

🩺 About Blood pressure after age 60

👉 It doesn’t suddenly become “okay” to be high just because you’re older.

✅ General targets (for most people 60+)

  • Ideal: below 120/80 mmHg
  • Acceptable (many doctors): below 130/80 mmHg

👉 These are similar to younger adults

👴 Why it can be different for some older adults

Doctors may adjust targets based on:

  • Overall health
  • Frailty or risk of falls
  • Other conditions

👉 Sometimes a slightly higher target (like <140/90) is accepted—but this is individual, not a rule

⚠️ Common myth

“Higher blood pressure is normal after 60.”

❌ Not true—it still increases risk of:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney problems

✔️ What matters most

  • Regular monitoring
  • Managing salt intake
  • Staying active
  • Taking medication if prescribed

🟢 Bottom line

After 60, healthy blood pressure targets are mostly the same, but may be personalized by your doctor.
